The ideal throw is one that can easily merge with the movements of combat. It should be so swift, and so easy to deliver that you can use it even while engaging multiple attackers.

The Sweep Throw is one such throw. The variation of the Sweep Throw that we will be teaching here is the one used by the Gyokku Ninja Clan.

EXECUTING THE SWEEP THROW

Let's go over the execution of the Sweep Throw step by step. As the opponent strikes, evade the blow and grip the opponent's wrist.

Ninja Throws - The Sweep Throw

Now place the other hand on the opponent's shoulder.

Ninja Throws - The Sweep Throw

Place your leg behind the opponent's leg, as shown, and begin a rotation of the upper torso, as shown...

Ninja Throws - The Sweep Throw

You will use this rotation of your upper torso, along with the force of the opponent's own blow, to put him on the ground. Try to slam the back of the opponent's skull on the ground as he falls to put him out of the fight.

Ninja Throws - The Sweep Throw

As you can see in the video, the sweep throw tends to use a circular motion of the torso, rather than any lifting movement, and uses the opponent's own force to put him on the ground. It works best when used with the flow of an opponent's attack, for example, if the opponent is striking with his entire weight behind the blow.

In such circumstances, the Ninja can evade the blow and use the opponent's own force and momentum in a sweep throw to smash the back of the opponent's skull onto the ground. Depending on the unique movements involved, the sweep throw can easily be employed with concussive, or even lethal force. Best of all, it can be applied virtually as fast as a fist or kicking attack, thereby making it a throw that will not break your rhythm of combat.

CRUCIAL NOTE

Please note that it is the circular movement of the torso, combined with the tripping movement of the leg and the force of the opponent's own attack, that powers this throw. If you find yourself physically pushing the opponent (or your training partner) to the ground with brute force, you are doing this throw wrong.

As with all throws, it is best if you practise this throw on a soft and yielding surface. If you practise with your friends, be very careful not to injure them. Look at how the master executes the throw in the video, and see how he avoids injury to the student. The person being thrown can reduce the force of the throw by slapping the mat hard.

...READINGS FROM THE SCROLLS...
The Eye of the Storm

Combt in Element Water

The master faced several students in simulated combat. As the students rushed in with their bokken, the master whirled, one bokken in each hand. Flowing between the students, his bokken rarely made direct contact with those of his students. Instead, the master seemed to move between the students, while his subtle weapons redirected their attacks into each other.

When faced with several opponents who seek to attack with crushing force, be like the water. Flow, your movements directed by the movements of your enemies, as your weapons deflect their attacks. Let their vectors cross each other, and they will find that they are attacking each other, while you are gone from their midst like the mist.

The is the Eye of the Storm, with the mind immersed in the element water. For combat is not the meeting of force with force, but the redirection of opposing force into forever.
