First of all, it is not always necessary to leap over a cut (or kick, or attack) to the legs - it is just as possible to simply move the leg being attacked back a bit, just out of range of the enemy's cut. It is perfectly acceptable to use moving back as a defense - just remember that it is the most common defense, and your enemies are used to it. Sometimes, a defense that is a little out of the ordinary can turn the tide of the conflict.
Be cautious when using leaping as a defense or attack - remember that it is difficut to change the direction of the body in mid-air, and this makes your movements predictable to an enemy. Make any attack or defense leap as short as possible, and with as little warning as possible.
Finally, when leaping over a cutting blade, leap opposite to the direction the attack is coming from - in essense, you 'step over' the attack. It is perfectly acceptable to leap with a 'stepping motion' and not with both legs.
SOME FINAL ADVICE
When learning these evasions, experiment with different methods of executing them, and go with what FEELS right to YOU. Each human is unique, therefore there will be methods of movement that are unique to you, methods that you are most comfortable with. Use this to devise methods of attack, defense and movement that are unique to yourself, and in doing so, become an unpredictable and lethal warrior.
IMPROVING YOUR EVASIONS
What you have learned here are merely the basic movements used in evasions. In coming lessons, you will be taught how to increase the speed of your evasions, thus making them far more effective when used against a foe. You will also be taught how to meditate to be more aware of a foe's very intentions. The basis of the combat ability of the ninja lies in consummate training of the mind - but before one can do that, the body must first, also, be trained to perfection. Practice well and regularly and perfect your movements, preparing your body to be able to move in battle meditation.
