The principle of a Forward or Backward Slapping Breakfall is very simple.
You need to do three things...

For one, you need to spread the force of the fall over a large area. Rather than a small part of your body taking the entire force of the fall, the impact should be spread over a wide area. This greatly reduces the chance of injury.

Secondly, as one falls, one should instinctively learn to hold the body in such a way that vital areas such as the skull, the neck, the joints and the organs, are protected from the main force of the fall.

Thirdly, one slaps the ground as one falls to generate a counterforce from the ground that pushes upwards at you as you push downwards, thereby helping to further reduce the force of your fall.

PROTECTING THE WRIST WHILE FALLING

The slapping motion used in these breakfalls is crucial because it KEEPS THE WRIST STRAIGHT, thus protecting the wrist and forearm as you fall forward or backwards. Too many untrained people tend to just throw their hands out in front or behind them as they fall, with their hand held at right angles to the forearm.

The result of holding the hand in this position as you fall is that this awkwardly bent hand takes the entire brunt of the fall, usually resulting in a shattering or dislocation of the bones of the wrist, or else in a serious fracture of the bones of the forearm.

The slapping motion of a forward or backward breakfall tends to result in the hand and the forearm being held in a straight line, and this is much less likely to result in a serious injury to the hand or the forearm.
