In many cultures, physical training is generally the province of the young – young people train for fitness and martial capability, for a variety of reasons. This is all to the good.

Unfortunately, if a young person studies under the wrong teacher, they can easily injure themselves. I myself know of a case when a young adult martial artist who had trained all his life in ‘hard’ style karate – which uses powerful blows and kicks, switched to a sports-combat school. Sport styles of the martial arts often use unrealistic strikes and kicks. When this young ‘hard’ style karate expert tried these moves, he unconsciously put the same power into them that he used to put into ‘hard’ style moves. The result? Within a month he had ripped the cartilage in his joints, and was seriously injured.

I tell this story just to illustrate how important it is to have a good master who teaches you how to train safely. And that’s exactly what we are going to do here. In these two videos, we will tell you how to use your body correctly so that you will NEVER be injured when practicing ANY sport.

As you can see from the video one should respect one’s body, and know how it works. The shoulders and the hips are ball-and-socket joints – they are capable of a wide variety of motions, and are strong joints.

They can also take damage, but I have never known any Gyokku Ninja to have a problem with the hips or shoulders from practicing the moves of Gyokku Ninjutsu. This is because Gyokku Ninjutsu combat is PRACTICAL, not stylish.

PRACTICAL COMBAT

I might as well make this point here. In this whole training course, we are going to focus on practical combat, practical ways of taking down an enemy or evading damage. There is NO ‘style’ or flowery methods of showing off in Gyokku Ninja Combat. There are many styles on the planet for those who wish to ‘impress others’ – whatever inexplicable reason that might serve. Gyokku Ninja combat training is for those who wish to take out an enemy as swiftly as possible.

THE ADVANTAGES OF PRACTICAL COMBAT TRAINING

One great advantage of a practical system of combat is that it uses simple, efficient movements that rarely can do damage to the joints. The flowery movements of styles not based on practical combat can often place a severe strain on the elbows or the knees. I do NOT wish to criticize anyone, but if you do practice a style with excessively flowery movements, please do consult the two videos above, especially the second one that talks of using the elbows and knees correctly.

Unlike the shoulders and the hips, the elbows and knees are not very efficient or strong joints – they are usually capable of strong movement only on one simple axis, and you should use them that way.

YOUTH AND OLD AGE

If you are young, and your body works well, you need to remember that you want to be able to train even in old age. Training correctly in youth will preserve your body so that it functions efficiently even in old age. This is a crucial lesson, my students, and one that every good master should teach in his dojo.

The young are always eager to train – but in old age, the training can hold off death itself – it can prevent the body’s systems from failing, prevent chronic diseases of mind and body, prevent the muscles from wasting away. It can keep your body and mind functioning. You NEED all your joints functional in old age. Obey the simple rules described in the videos, and you will HAVE them functional, not only in youth, but throughout your long and healthful life!
