The Ki meditation is the first step to mastery of the Ki, or Universal Energy. It is part of the BASIC MEDITATION, PHILOSOPHY and KI SECTION. This meditation is your introduction to the more mystical world of the ninja - a world where a warrior's blade is not guided merely by his mind and his fist, but by the very flow of the energies of a cosmos.
Of course, such mastery takes much training, but this simple meditation is your first step towards flowing with the 'Ki', in combat, and in life. Where the BASIC EXERCISES trained the body, the Ki Meditation is the beginning of your training of your mind and spirit.
...THIS LESSON CONTINUES AFTER THE MESSAGE BELOW...
WHAT IS THE KI?
The word 'Ki' roughly translates as 'cosmic energy', yet it means so much more. To the Ninja, the Ki represents the vast flows of the universe, and a ninja becomes invincible by learning to move with those flows.
DOES THIS SOUND TOO UNBELIEVABLE?
It is unbelievable only when you consider this from a western perspective. In the east, the idea of moving, thinking and acting in harmony with the universe is perfectly accepted.
HOW IT WORKS IN COMBAT...
I have seen a master stand, utterly unconcerned, his sword hanging by his side, as an opponent attacks him with a sword. At the last moment, his body flows out of the way of the opponent's sword, and his own sword, hanging so unconcerned at his side, is suddenly cutting the enemy.
The distinctive aspect of this method of fighting is that the ninja master seems to be able to find the 'cracks' in his opponent's movements. If the enemy, in attacking or defending, makes one single mistake, the sword of the ninja master flows into that mistake to defeat him.
HOW DOES ONE ATTAIN SUCH MASTERY?
With time, and with advanced meditations. The basic Ki meditation is only a beginning. Master it quickly, so that you may progress to a far more advanced mastery of the Ki.
HOW TO DO THE BASIC KI MEDITATION..
Mastery of the Ki begins with breathing - breathe in through the nose, and breathe out through the mouth. When you breathe, breathe using your stomach - as you breathe in, your stomach should move, not your chest.
See your breath as light, filling your belly from the bottom up as you breathe in, and leaving your belly from the top down as you breathe out.
Breathe silently - remember, you are ninja.
Touch your tongue to the roof of your mouth to open channels that allow the Ki to flow.
In the center of your body is the 'one-point', known in Japanese as the 'tai-ten'. It lies about two inches below the navel. It is taught that the cosmos flows through you at this point. You must concentrate on the tai-ten as you breathe. Visualize a sun of energy bursting out from the tai-ten and filling your entire being.
Do everything described above at once. Do this meditation at least once every day for a month. This is the beginning of mastery of the Ki.
