The student's limbs were in great pain - this was not a result of injury, but a result of the previous day's training.
So it had been for more than a year.
Training would last for hours, and then the next day would be spent in great pain, as his limbs struggled to recover and to grow. And so it was for years to come, until one day, the student awoke, and the pain did not affect him. Yes, it was there, but so much a part of him that it did not trouble him, was not even unpleasant.
And he found that the years of pain had brought him strange gifts - if he was injured, his body healed much faster than that of an ordinary man. And he did not age as other men did. The friends of his youth were all old men, soft and fat - not he. He had the body and look of youth, for the years of pain had made him, in a small way, an immortal.
