Mild Hand Conditioning is part of the BASIC EXERCISES, as it is important to ensure that the tissues of the hand are tough enough to not take damage in combat. Similarly, one practices special forms of PUSHUPS to strengthen the wrist in combat. However, extreme hand conditioning can be very dangerous and even disabling. Please make sure to read the text tutorial section under the video to learn why you should not engage in extreme hand conditioning.

USES OF HAND CONDITIONING
MILD Hand Conditioning is useful in Ninja Training, as it hardens the tissues of the hand, and slightly deadens the sensitivity of the hands to pain. Extreme hand conditioning is NOT RECOMMENDED if you intend to use your hands for other purposes than combat. Heed my words. If you want to do more damage to a foe than you can with your bare hands, use a weapon. To turn your hands into pure weapons by extreme hand conditioning, you have to sacrifice their ability to do fine work, which is NOT RECOMMENDED.
HOW TO DO MILD HAND CONDITIONING
Mild Hand Conditioning is safe, and can be done against a tree or wall. Look at the video to learn the exercise, and consult the text below to add to your knowledge.
When you do these exercises, bear in mind that the bones of your hand are weaker than the tree or the wall. Do not strike so hard that you will damage the bones of your hand.
For the first method of hand conditioning, slap the open palm against a tree or wall with reasonable force, taking care that the tips of the fingers should also strike the tree or wall. In this way you condition not only the palm, but also the tips of the fingers.
Now place your hand in the Shotei Palm Heel position and strike the tree or wall with the heel of your palm.
Now place your hand in the Shuto Knife Hand position and strike the tree or wall with the fleshy part of the edge of your hand.
Now rub the palms and fingers of your hands on the tree or wall, in a circle, first clockwise and then anti-clockwise.
Now, reversing the hand, lightly rap the knuckles on the tree or wall. Do not damage your knuckles.
IMPORTANT POINT: You can condition the knuckles by doing PUSHUPS on your fists – that is to say, on your knuckles. If you do this, you must not rub the hands after finishing your knuckle pushups. This is because there is a nerve that runs over one of the large knuckles. Doing knuckle pushups gently moves this nerve into the space between the knuckles, which prevents it from being struck and injured in combat.
If you rub the knuckles after doing your knuckle pushups, this prevents the nerve from being moved into the space between the knuckles, and defeats the purpose of the exercise, so do not do this.

A student trained regularly at breaking objects. Large stone slabs, wooden planks, all were shattered by the fury of his obsession.
One day, a master passed him as he was setting a stone slab upon two blocks. The master approached the student.
‘You do well to train so assiduously, my student,’ said the master.
‘I thank you, my master.’
The master gestured at the stone block, ‘I wonder if you would allow me the honor, my student.’
The student bowed, ‘The honor would be mine, master.’ He stepped back, to give the master space to strike the stone with his hands.
Casually, the master removed a steel mace from within his robes, and struck the stone lightly with it, shattering the stone.
The student was speechless.
The master smiled at him kindly, ‘You do well to train so hard, my student. But remember that it is the end that matters, not merely the means. The core of the philosophy of the ninja is to attain the end by whatever means can be most easily employed.’
