The Deceptive Knife Hand is another mind-body coordination exercise that is a part of the BASIC EXERCISES. It might take some time to master, especially for a beginner, yet it lays the foundation for learning far more complex and effective techniques. Another similar mind-body coordination exercise is CLAWS OF THE TIGER.

USES OF THE DECEPTIVE KNIFE HAND
Deceptive Knife Hand is a coordination exercise often used in the ninja training of newly initiated members of the Gyokku Ninja Clan. It trains mind and body to make learning future exercises easier. It also incorporates a simple combat move, the Ushiro Shuto, or Reverse Knife Hand.
This exercise can be confusing to beginners because it is a coordination exercise, designed to grant your mind an enhanced command over your body, allowing you to learn complex combat techniques and movements later that an untrained human would find difficult to learn. So be dedicated and master the Deceptive Knife Hand.
HOW TO EXECUTE THE DECEPTIVE KNIFE HAND
This ninja exercise requires complex movements, and it is STRONGLY recommended that you learn it from the training video provided earlier in this page. Look at the video to learn the exercise, and consult the text below to add to your knowledge.
Sit in the Horse Stance, with one forearm held vertically before your body, the hand in Shuto Knife Hand position, held before your face. The other hand is in a Tettsui HammerFist position, held below the elbow of the first forearm.
Now, execute an Ushiro Shuto Reverse Knife hand to an opponent coming up behind you WITH THE HAND in the Tettsui HammerFist position.
At the same time, lower the hand that was in a Shuto formation in front of your face to the position where the hand in the Tettsui formation was, and change the hand formation from Shuto to Tettsui.

The master watched two novices train against each other with bokken. One of the students was obviously better than the other, though in the use of two swords he relied over heavily on his right hand. Nevertheless, he easily overshadowed and defeated the other student.
'Enough,' said the master, and stepped forward. He carried with him a rope. With this he tied the victorious student's right hand to the student's side, and so entangled the student's left leg as to make it almost unusable.
'So,' the master smiled, and placed a bokken in the victorious student's left hand. The master bowed slightly and stepped back. Once again the students faced each other, and this time the previously victorious student was noticeably slower in his attacks and reactions. He was defeated.
'You see, my student,' said the master, as he unbound his hand and foot, 'It is not victory or defeat over the body of another that defines a warrior, but command over one's own body. He whose mind cannot command all of his limbs effectively carries always around with him a possibly fatal weakness.'
You will note from the previous story that Ninja train at ambidexterity, that is to say, at using both sides of the body equally well. This means that an exercise like Deceptive Knife hand, or the CLAWS OF THE TIGER, that uses the two sides of the body differently, must also be practiced with the moves mirrored with the opposite side of the body.
