The Horse Stance is a simple stance learned in the BASIC EXERCISES. The Horse Stance originated, like a good many of the more ancient ninja techniques, in China. It is not a combat stance - instead, it is used in the Basic Exercises to train the fortitude and will - that, and the muscles of the thighs.

LEARNING THE TECHNIQUE AND PURPOSE OF THE HORSE STANCE

USES OF THE HORSE STANCE

ninja horse stance a master observes a ninja student

Originating in China, where it is still used in many martial arts, the Horse Stance is a useful exercise for building fortitude and will in ninja training. It was a practice among the old masters to have their students sit in Horse Stance for hours on end until the students were almost ready to collapse from exhaustion.

We will not ask anything like this of you. In the beginning, you would be wise to modulate the intensity of your training. Do not attempt to train too hard at first, lest you injure yourself. Instead, train with dedication, regularly, day after day and week after week, and you will find this a far better way to increase your capabilities. The same attitude must be brought to the Horse Stance. What is important at the moment is that you learn how to do it correctly, and then, that you do it exactly as recommended in various beginner's exercises. More challenging exercises will come your way in time. Rest assured of that.

The Horse Stance is used in exercises like TIGER PAWS AIR and Deceptive Knife Hand. It is also used in advanced exercises later.

HOW TO SIT IN 'HORSE STANCE'

Executing the horse stance is rather simple, as you will see in the steps below...

You begin with standing in a basic position as shown in the video, with the feet about shoulder width apart...

Now, with a circular motion, extend one leg sideways, and then the other, so that your legs are now twice your shoulder width apart.

Crouch with the legs half bent, much as you would if you were sitting on a horse. Though this might seem easy at first, it will become increasingly difficult the longer you try to hold it.

Sometimes, randomly during the day, try to sit for three to four minutes in Horse Stance as a beginners exercise in will and focus. Later, as your body adapts, you can sit in Horse Stance for longer periods. Avoid doing too much at first and injuring yourself. The wise warrior avoids injury and supplements such good sense with dedication.

The Song of Fortitude

Ninja trains on an icy morning

Our awareness of Time wavers and is altered
By our experience
Of the passing of Time.

For long hours the Warrior trains
Under the burning cold
Of the falling water;
Its icy embrace held back
Only by the heat within himself.

What shall withstand the fires
Of a Warrior's mind and heart?
What shall not bend
Before a will
Unbent?

Ninja Kuji Kiri Nagamaki

Know, my sons and daughters,
That our Will is a bowl
Into which we pour
The Universe,

That it may take the shape
Of our Dreams.
