Gyokku Ninjutsu masters talk about what makes a warrior...

"Master, how does Gyokku Ninjutsu define being a warrior? What quality makes one a warrior - or not?"

Daichi Kawabata - real life gyokku ninja master

This is a most interesting question, honorable ninja of the Clan. Obviously, it is more than mere brute strength. I have seen one man take on twenty in hand-to-hand combat, and win, or a much smaller man take on a much larger one and win.

Yes, to an extent, their victories were due to training and combat ability. But they also had a belief in themselves, a fighting spirit that defeated their enemy's spirit even before they struck.

ninja philosophy - what makes a warrior

Many battles are won in the mind before they are won in the external universe.

I have myself faced off against a leopard, armed only with two swords, and have killed a four hundred pound wild boar armed only with an axe. Again, my victories were due to fighting spirit and also - in the case of the boar - due to correct combat strategy.

However, in the philosophies of Gyokku Ninjutsu, the successful making of war is not alone what defines a warrior. What defines a warrior is how one thinks and acts - if you think of yourself as a warrior, if you meet any challenge with determination and will - then... you are a warrior!

And discipline

Discipline - even self discipline - is what makes a warrior. Discipline is a bright flame that fuels the warrior spirit, keeping one training, keeping one moving forward when moving forward is very difficult, whether in training or in combat.

IF YOU TRAIN WHEN YOUR BODY IS EXHAUSTED; IF YOU CAN GO ON IN YOUR TRAINING WHEN YOU FIND IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DO SO, THEN YOU WILL SHOW THE SAME IRON SPIRIT IN COMBAT, AND WILL BE A HIGHLY EFFECTIVE WARRIOR.

And there are greater disciplines even than this. There is the discipline of the mind, which allows the great warrior to think clearly when engaged in combat, to be calm in the face of anger, to appreciate beauty even in the face of war; to control one's emotions... my brother, this is the mark, the way of the true warrior!
