...CRUCIAL POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN EVADING AN ATTACK TO THE HEAD...

As the opponent strikes at your head, duck the head down under the blow. Use not only the neck and the spine, but also bend the thighs while ducking.

A ninja uses a head ducking evasion to dodge or evade an attack

When you evade an attack to the head, one way of making the evasion more effective is to 'go with the flow' - that is to say, instead of simply ducking the head down, duck it in the same direction that the enemy's attack is moving in - this moving 'with the enemy's attack' give you more time in which to evade it effectively.

This point is truly crucial - NEVER, if possible, EVER take your eyes off your enemy. Whether you are evading an attack or making one, you must always keep your foes within your field of vision if at all possible. There are special ways of looking at an enemy in combat, especially if you are fighting multiple attackers. These methods we will teach you as the training becomes more sophisticated. For now, simply ensure that any enemy - or enemies - that you are engaged in combat with are ALWAYS within your field of vision.

Never neglect safety - it goes without saying that you must not practice this with a bladed weapon. It is true that the ninja in the image is evading a wakizashi or short sword. However, he is an experienced combatant, and even he did not start out by doing this. The best thing to use in training is a rubber or foam sword, or else a rolled up newspaper. Be aware that it is possible to kill with a rolled up newspaper if you thrust with power into the throat. Train with great care and do not injure a training partner.

Practice - always practice. The Gyokku Ninja have a saying, 'The Thousandth Cut is Perfection'. What this means is that one does not practice a technique only once - one practices it again and again, many times over, day after day and week after week, until the technique becomes INSTINCT - that that instinct is what will destroy your foes in combat. Never forget this lesson, my deshi.
