...VITAL POINTS TO REMEMBER ABOUT EVADING A HORIZONTAL CUT TO THE BODY...

The most important thing of all to remember is that the horizontal cut to the belly area is one that cannot be safely evaded except by stepping backwards - you must step back, out of the range of the weapon. The belly is VERY vulnerable to such an attack - be careful to avoid the cut, or you will find your belly cut open.

A ninja uses a back step evasion to dodge or evade a blade weapon cut to the body

As soon as the weapon passes your body, while it is still in full swing, step forward and counterattack, blocking the weapon arm of the enemy and making your own attack. When countering an enemy with a weapon, do not hesitate to use powerful bone-crushing techniques or nerve attacks. Do not allow the enemy the chance to recover.

When counterattacking, BEWARE - if the opponent has a double-edged weapon, be careful that he does not reverse the swing of his weapon to cut you. An adept enemy could reverse and cut easily even with a single-edged weapon. When counterattacking, first cut the weapon arm - or even both arms. With the arms disabled, the enemy is then vulnerable to being destroyed.

When counterattacking also BEWARE - it is possible, as you step forward to counterattack, that your enemy might meet your forward movement with a thrust with a dagger in his 'off-hand' - that is to say, from the hand not holding the main weapon. While your attention is on the enemy's main weapon, you might easily be killed by a thrust from a hardly-visible dagger in the opponent's other hand. Be alert.

Once again, I stress - when in combat against an enemy armed with bladed weapons, attack and disable the hands as quickly as possible. It is not very difficult - almost any deep cut to the arms will be reasonably disabling, but for those beginning to practice the way of the ninja - attack the inside of the wrist, the tendons on the inside angle of the elbow, or the high point or tip of the shoulder muscle. There are many other areas to attack, but begin with these. The cut to the wrist or the elbow generally results in blood loss, while the cut to the shoulder will cause the arm to hang down uselessly.

SAFETY - I stress that you must not practice these techniques with a real weapon. Practice with a partner with a foam or rubber weapon, or a rolled-up newspaper.
