There is hardly anyone who has started to train in strength or the martial arts who does not know how to do pushups. Nevertheless, it is a part of the BASIC EXERCISES, as special forms of this exercise can be used to strengthen the wrist, to allow for more powerful strikes. These special pushups are also useful for HAND CONDITIONING. Beginners in the martial arts should take special care to go through the video and tutorial below...

USES OF PUSHUPS
There is hardly anyone who doesnít know how to do a pushup, or what the use of a pushup is. However, as part of this initial preparatory ninja training course, we will touch upon this exercise.
THE MOST IMPORTANT USE OF PUSHUPS in the ninja initial training is to strengthen the wrists. A person who is not used to striking and combat training will often injure their wrists while striking, because their wrists are not strong enough to bear the power of the strikes. Doing knuckle pushups (shown in the video) trains the wrist to bear the power of strikes, AND TO BECOME IMMUNE TO WRIST LOCKS IN COMBAT. Knuckle pushups are also useful for HAND CONDITIONING.
The pushup is excellent for training upper body strength. It is also good for increasing basic striking power, though only to a certain extent. After the age of eighteen, the bench press should be used to maximize the upper limit of striking power, but we will touch upon that in its place.
For the person beginning his or her ninja training, it is important to build the ability to do at least a hundred pushups, with as many breaks in between sets and with whatever repetitions per set that you like.
As something to aim for, even the least of the beginners among the ninja in the east can do five hundred pushups in sets of a hundred each, and most reasonably trained ninja can do a thousand pushups in sets of a hundred each. PLEASE NOTE that I tell you this only as something to aim for, or to amuse yourself doing while doing your beginners training. If you are unable to do more than a hundred pushups, thatís perfectly alright. There are other, easier ways to build striking power, such as the bench press, and the weighted strikes, both of which weíll be training you in, in the course of this training. If you can do a hundred pushups, thatís fine. If you can go five hundred, thatís also fine. If you can do a thousand, thatís also fine. Do what you CAN do, and do what it is FUN and ENJOYABLE for you to do. Ninja training has a thousand routes to strength, combat ability and power. If one does not work for you, ANOTHER METHOD WILL!
HOW TO DO A PUSHUP
Look at the video to learn the exercise, and consult the text below to add to your knowledge.
One thing to remember as you do your pushups is that you have to keep the back straight, and the chest and jaw lower than your pelvis as your body lowers to the ground.
Breathe in as you go down and breathe out as you power up.

The student trained night and day, and gained in strength and power, and yet the master was not satisfied. He overcame many opponents, and was called undefeatable, and his master urged him to greater training.
Then came the day of his greatest defeat, and it troubled neither the studentís mind nor his heart.
And his master called him strong.
He faced the death of a beloved, and could yet look upon the shades of the sakura and the glorious sunlight with joy.
And his master deemed himÖ invincible.
