USES OF THE CRANE STANCE

The Crane Stance is used to train one of the most crucial of the ninja's attributes, the sense of balance. There are two aspects to balance - the Eye and the Ear. Allow me to explain..

The eye continuously measures distances to various objects, and the brain then calculates these distances and your movements to balance your body and keep you upright. This is the use of the eye in balance.

An organ in your ear continuously measures your movements, and uses these movements to help keep you upright. This is the use of the ear in balance.

The consummate warrior uses both the eye and the ear to balance. You will learn to master both these aspects in the course of your ninja training.

HOW TO DO THE CRANE STANCE

This is how you do the Crane Stance. Look at the video to learn the exercise, and consult the text below to add to your knowledge.

Stand on one leg and rest the foot of the other leg on your knee.

Now raise both the hands and hold them in the 'crane's beak' position.

Now go up on your toes. Hold this position, standing on one leg on your toes.

Begin to count slowly to a hundred. If you are unable to maintain your balance, stop your count, restore your 'Crane Stance' and then continue the count.

When you finish balancing on one leg for a count of hundred, you should then balance on the other leg for the same amount of time.

USING THE CRANE STANCE TO TRAIN THE BALANCE

To train the eyes for balance...

Go into the Crane Stance and fix your eyes on an object some distance away - say about ten feet or three meters away. Keep your gaze fixed on the object, and go into Crane Stance and maintain your balance on each leg for a count of hundred.

To train the ears for balance...

Go into the Crane Stance and CLOSE YOUR EYES and try to maintain your balance. Effectively, by doing this, you are learning to balance using only your ears! This has extreme applications for the ninja, not the least of which is enabling the ninja to navigate and accurately chart his or her movements in pitch darkness. This is crucial to the stealth capabilities of the ninja.

Maintain balance on each leg for a count of hundred. You will find it almost impossible to maintain the Crane Stance with your eyes closed for a count of hundred. However, with time, it will become easy. It is essential that you train your body to balance using either the eyes or the ears.
