USES OF THE IMMORTAL'S STEP

The Immortal’s Step is used to increase mind-body coordination, to enhance the your ability not only to control your limbs, but to get all the limbs of your body to move together in coordination. As such it is an important part of your initial ninja training. This exercise also incorporates a simple Shotei palm-heel strike to the nose, but this is just a minor element of the exercise. It is only included because many ninja exercises incorporate training on multiple levels. This basic exercise, for example, not only enhances mind-body coordination, but incorporates a basic level of training in the Shotei, and also a minor training of the muscles of the calves.

This simple coordination exercise is actually crucially important, allowing the Ninja to later learn far more complex sequences of attack, defense and footwork relatively quickly and easily.

HOW TO DO THE IMMORTAL'S STEP

The immortal’s Step is simple to execute if you start out by doing it slowly. Look at the video to learn the exercise, and consult the text below to add to your knowledge.

Simply stand with one leg a step before the other.

Extend the opposite hand to the leading leg forward, in the Shotei palm heel position, as if you were attacking the base of an opponent’s nose.

Now, in a single step, jump the leading leg back, and the rear leg forward. At the same time, draw the leading hand back and strike with a Shotei attack with the other hand.

This is an excellent coordination and endurance exercise.

Continue the exercise, alternating the movements of the hands and legs, as in the video.

Modulate your breathing so that you breathe out with each strike.

The Importance of Perfection.

Of course, all true warriors dream of attaining such a state. How does one do so? It is simple. One cultivates perfection in one's EVERY action, whether that action is executing a sword stroke or cultivating a garden or creating a painting - or looking at a sunrise or a flower. Each action is perfect, and as they blend one into the other, the life becomes perfect.

The perfect man will be fearless, for he is perfect. This is the ideal, the pinnacle of the teaching that we follow. No other teaching is necessary. In combat, such a man fights without fear - in combat, such a man cannot be stopped by fifty men.
