However, the clans used to fund themselves on contracts and affiliations with various warring Daimyo. Once Japan stepped into the modern age with the Meiji Restoration, ninja clans more or less vanished completely, except in the legends of the people.
Even the Gyokku have only survived because we are the oldest of all the Clans, and because we have adhered to the traditional, original philosophical roots of the Way that originated in China and India. Meaning that the way of the ninja was, to us, more than a system of guerilla warfare or even of survival - it was a way of life that we treasured and preserved.
